I’ve been looking for ways to introduce gold into my work for a long time. The problem is that gold is over $1400.00 an ounce! For a little perspective, silver is at the most expensive that I have ever seen it (it’s approaching three times the cost of when I started making jewelry), and costs $36.00 an ounce.
The new earrings above are a material called Vermeil. But what the heck is that?
Vermeil is a French term used to describe a sterling silver object that is coated with a thick layer of 24K gold. The gold layer must be at least 100 millionths of an inch (quite thick, as far as plating goes). A lot of jewelry that is plated in gold is; 1. not sterling silver underneath- it is usually a much cheaper base metal like brass, nickel or copper and therefore has the potential to cause allergic reactions and 2. is plated in a very thin layer that may wear off quickly with use. Vermeil avoids both of those pitfalls, giving it the gorgeous, luxurious, 24K gold finish, while still keeping the price affordable.
